Preventative maintenance is driven by time or event-based triggers. Downtime is scheduled based on usage or number of days in use. Example: Changing car oil after 5,000 miles or after six months.
Predictive maintenance monitors the machine during normal operating conditions. The data is analyzed and provides a normal operating level. If the machine goes outside of the normal range it should be inspected by the Maintenance team. It is useful in determining failure before it happens. Furthermore, the more data and sensors available, the problem will be found quickly and reduce downtime. Example: Check engine light comes on while driving
